I am new to the plants in mason j jars and when you say water when dry. Question how dry ?
Hi June!
Water your mason jar plants whenever the soil is dry to the touch. Simply touch the soil and if it looks and feels dry, go ahead and water it! Make sure not to over water though, as there are no drainage holes in the jars!
Hi, thanks for sharing this! It looks as though there are shells or rocks at the bottom of the jar. Are there or am I seeing things? Did you place them for drainage?
Hi there,
Yes, you are correct – thank you for pointing that out and we apologize for leaving that out. There are rocks and pebbles at the bottom of the jar to help with drainage!
You didn’t leave the rocks for drainage part out
Odd question… I tried this once and even with pebbles in the bottom, it grew a lot of algae in the jar and eventually killed the plants. Have you encountered this at all? any tips?
Hi Ally,
Hmmm that seems odd! I can’t say that’s ever happened to me, but the only thing I can think of is that maybe you’re giving them too much water. Try a little less water and also clean the pebbles once in a while to keep them clean and prevent buildup.
How do you take the plant and soil out without damaging?
Hi there,
You just have to do it very slowly and carefully. Make sure to take your time and never pull too hard on the plant. It should come out easily, but if not, simply take some soil out, little by little, and then carefully shake the plant out.
What size mason jars did you use?
HI Lovely,
Standard sized mason jars were used, so 16 oz 🙂
I like the idea of planting herbs in a jar. Doesn’t take a lot of room and great to have on hand for cooking.
My first time growing herbs and also in jars.
Used my cricut machine to create the little labels, pleased with the look, just need the herbs to grow now. Fingers crossed 🤞
