There are hundreds of different crocus flower varieties from snow crocuses which are the first to bloom, to giant Dutch crosuses, and tiny crocuses that reach only 2″ in height! But whichever variety of crocus you choose to plant, these flowers are nonetheless showstopping not only because of their bright colors but also because of their intoxicating scent!

Planting Crocus Flowers:

  • Right before the ground freezes in the fall, plant crocus bulbs.
  • It's best to plant crocus bulbs about 6-8 weeks before a hard frost. If you live in a colder area, this will usually be in September/October, and if you live in a warmer area, this will usually be in October/November.
  • Make sure to plant the bulbs in well draining soil, as crocuses do not like wet, soggy soil.
  • Work in organic matter such as compost, peat, or a substitute to a depth of at least 10 inches.
  • Plant each crocus bulb about 4-5 inches deep (with the pointy end up).
  • Water well immediately after planting.
  • Plant the bulbs in groups or clusters rather than spacing them in a single line.
  • Single flowers usually get lost in the landscape, so be sure to plant them in groups of 10 or more.

Crocus Care:

  • Apply a balanced fertilizer in early fall.
  • Throughout the fall, keep the bulbs watered but not water logged.
  • Cover the beds with mulch right before winter.
  • In late February, remove the mulch from the beds so that the flowers can come through.

So now that you know how to grow crocus flowers, it's time to roll up your sleeves and get to planting!
