Planting Your Fig Tree:

  • If you're planning on growing figs in a pot, use a soil-based potting mix and add fine bark chips. Keep your fig plant in full light, preferably a south facing window.
  • Use a high-nitrogen fertilizer once a month and water your fig tree moderately.
  • If you're planting your fig tree outdoors, plant it in spring in full or partial sun. Make sure the soil is well drained and contains organic material.
  • For pot grown fig trees, remove the tree from its pot and remove any circling roots by laying the root ball on its side. Use shears to cut through the roots.
  • Then, dig a hole that is a few inches deeper and wider, and spread out the roots. Set your tree on a small mound of soil in the middle of the hole. Spread the roots away from the trunk.
  • Plant your tree 2-4 inches deeper than it was originally.
  • Place your fig tree at least 20 feet away from any other trees or buildings.

Caring for Your Fig Tree:

  • Water the trees while they're young on a regular basis.
  • If your fig tree is grown directly in the garden, it does not need any fertilizer.
  • Add a layer of mulch around the tree to keep weeds at bay.
  • During their dormant season, take care of your fig tree by pruning it.

Harvesting Your Fig Tree:

  • Figs will be ready for harvest when they are fully colored and soft to the touch.
  • You can store figs in the fridge for 2-3 days, or freeze them for up to a year.

Happy Planting!
