Climate:

Kale is a biennial, meaning it is a cool weather crop that will grow in a container all year round in many regions, except during hot summer months. Kale is best suited to USDA zones 8-10.

When to Plant:

You can start planting your seedlings directly into the soil in your container after the last frost.

  1. Choose to place your kale container in a sunny spot that will get at least 6 hours of sunlight, especially as it's still growing.
  2. Kale likes a lot of room, so grab a pot that's at least one foot in diameter and don't plant more than two kale plants in one pot. You can also plant some Swiss chard in there for a colorful pot!
  3. Choose a good quality potting soil that is rich – kale loves to eat!

Caring For Your Kale

  1. Although kale loves to sun, you must be careful so that it doesn't get TOO much of it – otherwise it can wilt and dye.
  2. To keep this from happening, add mulch around the base so that the plant can retain its moisture.
  3. Water your kale once or twice a week – the soil should be moist down to an inch into the pot. You should also water your kale plant more often during the hot, summer months.
  4. Fertilize your kale plant with a tablespoon of 8-4-4 water soluble fertilizer and mix it with a gallon of water every 7-10 days.

Harvesting Your Kale

Harvest your kale from the bottom of the stalk in an upward motion. Make sure to leave at least 4 leaves in the pot for continuous growth.

Now you can enjoy the health benefits of kale!
